UNESCO World Heritage in Bulgaria

  

     

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanluk is dated back to the late 4th - early 3rd century B.C. The impressive murals in the burial chamber and in the corridor are of exclusive artistic value. The tomb is located in the Tyulbeto Hill near the town of Kazanluk.

  



The Ivanovo Rock Churches
The rock monastery complex ‘St. Archangel Michael’ shows partially preserved churches inbuilt in the rocks. The murals in the Church of The Holy Virgin are considered one of the most significant achievements of 14th century Bulgarian Medieval art. The monatsery complex is located in the rocks of the Nature Park ‘Rousenski Lom’, about 20 km away from the city of Rousse.



The Church of Boyana is famous for its unique murals from the 10th-11th and 13th century which count among the masterpieces of the Medieval European painting art. The church is situtated on the foothills of the Vitosha Mountains, approx. 10 km from Sofia city centre.

  




The Madara Horseman
is an early medieval rock relief, cut into the Madara Rocks on the northern slope of the Provadyisko Plateau nearby the town of Shoumen. At a height of about 25m the relief displays an image of a life-sized horseman with a dog and a lion. The relief is unique of its kind in the European cultural history.




The majestic Rila Monastery is situated in the Northwest part of the Rila Mountains. It is the most significant sanctuary in Bulgaria and main attraction for numerous pilgrims and tourists. The monastery was founded in the 10th century and reestablished in the 13th-14th century. It became an important educational and cultural centre in the 15th century. The monastery’s impressive present-day appearance dates back to the 19th century. The Rila Monastery treasures numerous valuable manuscripts, original icons, beautiful frescoes and masterpieces of woodcarving-work.

Old Nessebur
The old town of Nessebur is situtaed on a small rocky peninsula. Old Nessebur is a monument of urban architecture - an architectural, historical and archaeological reserve with valuable archaeological relics from different periods. Main object of interest are the originally preserved churches from the 5th till the 17th century, the early Byzantine fortress walls built in the 4th and 5th century as well as the picturesque old houses showing specific architecture.

  

Pirin National Park The Park occupies an area of approx. 40000 hectare in the upper parts of the Northern Pirin Mounatins and preserves unique flora and fauna. The mounatins’ highest peak Vihren (2915m) is within the borders of the Park. Approx. 80% of the area is covered by forests. The ‘Bayuvi Doupki-Dzhindzhiritsa’ Biosphere Reserve and the Yulen Reserve are also part of the Pirin National Park. 




The Sreburna Reserve is a biosphere reserve in the valley of the Danube which includes the Sreburna Lake and its surroundings. It has been established for the preservation of rare plant and animal species. It is situated 16 km to the West of the town of Silistra.


 



The Tomb of Sveshtari
 A Thracian tomb from the first half of the 3rd century B.C. The central burial chamber displays exceptionally lavish decoration and impressive caryatides in high relief. It is located nearby the village of Sveshtari, 7 km northwest of the town of Isperih.
