Old wines in modern bottles- the true wine tour through Bulgaria

In Bulgaria wine is considered more than tradition. Wine is considered love and art. Discover the excellent taste of Bulgarian wines - this wine tour will take you on a true wine adventure through the country.

 

 

Day 1. Arrival

Arrival at Sofia Airport. You will be welcomed by a professional tour guide. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Sofia.

 

Day 2. Sofia - Veliko Turnovo

Sightseeing tour of Sofia with a visit the Alexander Nevski Cathedral. Continue through the gorges of the Balkan Range to see the picturesque monastery of Troyan. Lunch in an authentic tavern including a glass of the well known plum brandy of Troyan. Follow the route to the old royal capital of Veliko Turnovo. Wine tasting in the Lyaskovets wine cellar known for the good sparkling wines - the most famous Bulgarian sparkling wine “Iskra” is produced in Lyaskovets wine cellar. Other white wine brands: Aligote (dry white wine with specific flavour), Nordkrone (white wine featuring delicate bouquet), dry Chardonnay. Red wines are presented by variations of the Cabernets: dry Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon Lyaskovets, Cabernet Sauvignon Oak. Overnight in Veliko Turnovo/ Arbanassi.

 

Day 3. Veliko Turnovo - Shoumen

Discover Veliko Turnovo - the old royal capital of Bulgaria. See the Fortress Tsarevets and old cobbled streets of crafts. Visit the nearby town-museum Arbanassi and see the ethnographic Konstantsaliev house and the Nativity Church. Continue to Shoumen and enjoy a program in the country’s largest and oldest stud farm “Kabiyuk”. Enjoy a new wine-experience in the wine cellar of Osmar - get acquainted with ‘Pelin’ absinth wine (white and red) - qualitative aromatic wine featuring slightly herbal bittersweet flavour. The herbal bouquet consist of nearly 30 forest herbs: absinthe, yarrow, camomile, thyme, basil etc. Overnight in Shoumen.

 

Day 4. Shoumen - Plovdiv

The journey leads you through the gorges of the Balkan Range to the architectural reserve Zheravna. Take a walk in the narrow stone-cobbled streets and old ethnographic houses. Continue to the town of Sliven - the ‘town of the blue mountains’ and enjoy a wine tasting in Chateau Windy Hills, known for small series of quality red wines(Caberne Sauvignon, Merlot und Sira) and young wines representing the ‘new style’ in wine creation. Follow the wine route to the South and stop for a new wine tatsing at the Oryahovitsa cellar (Belvedere Group Domaine Menada Company). Selective harvest and experienced winemakers created high qualitative wines with unique flavours: Tcherga, Augusta, Trayana, Ozon, Orjachovitza. Overnight in Plovdiv.

 

Day 5. Plovdiv- Batschkovo Kloster

Sightseeing tour of Old Plovdiv including a visit to the Ethnographic Museum and the Roman Theater. Leave the city to visit the country’s second largest monastery  Bachkovo situated in the picturesque Rhodope mountains. Follow the route for a new experience - wine tasting in Villa Vinifera cellar known for the exquisite Mavrud, Cabernet and Merlot wines with shiny bright color, intensive flavor and completed fruity taste. Overnight in Plovdiv

 

Day 6. Plovdiv- Melnik

The tour continues to the southwestern part of the country. Stop for a sightseeing tour of Bansko - old town and famous ski resort. Follow the wine route to winegrowing region of Struma and the smallest town in Bulgaria - Melnik. Sample the wine of Chateau Hotovo and enjoy tapping wine from the wood yourselves. Red wines are typical for this region: Merlot, Cabernet, Melnik, Dimyat. Old-village-style dinner in the tiny village of Rozhen. Home made bread and fragrant spices, abundance of frish salads, BBQ and a lot of home made wine  will complete the nice impressions of the day. Overnight in Sandanski/ Rozhen.

 

Day 7. Melnik - Sofia

See the picturesque Rozhen Monastery and the small town of Melnik with ethnographic Kordopulov’s house from the 18th century. Follow the route to the majestic Rila Monastery (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage), a must-see for Bulgaria visitors. Continue to Sofia. Farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant accompanied by folklore programme. Overnight in Sofia.

 

Day 8. Departure

Transfer to the Sofia airport.
