Roses, Culture and Black Sea Coast

Day 1. Arrival

Arrival at Sofia Airport. You will be welcomed by a professional tour guide. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Sofia.

 

Day 2. Sofia - Koprivshtitsa

Sightseeing tour of Sofia - see the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, the Church of St. Sofia, the Russian Church of St. Nicolas, the 4th century Rotunda of St. George and a part of the remainders of the old Roman settlement. Continue to the picturesque museum town  of Koprivshtitsa. A visit to the old town - see the lovely old ethnographic houses. Dinner and overnight in Koprivshtitsa.

 

Day 3.  Koprivshtitsa- The Rose Valley- Kazanlak

After breakfast departure to the Valley of the Roses. Stops for photo shooting in the rose fields. In the afternoon a visit of Kazanlak- see the Thracian Tomb (4th century B.C., UNESCO site) and the newly discovered Tomb “Golyama Kosmatka”, enjoy a tasting and presentation of rose products at the Ethnographic complex and visit the Museum of History. Dinner and overnight in Kazanlak.

 

Day 4. Rose Festival in Kazanluk - Etura - Veliko Tarnovo

After breakfast participate in the Rose Festival in Kazanluk - rose picking and rose-oil boiling demonstration followed by election of the “Rose Queen”, funny carnival parade  and folklore show in the centre. Lunch at a picnic restaurant. Leave the Rose Valley in the afternoon and stop for a visit of the impressive Russian church in the town of Shipka. Continue through the gorges of the Balkan Mountains and see the Etura open air museum. Continue to Veliko Turnovo. Dinner and overnight in Veliko Tarnovo/ Arbanassi.

 

Day 5. Veliko Turnovo - Preobrazhenski Monastery - Arbanssi

Sightseeing tour of the old Royal capital Turnov - visit the fortress of Tsarevets, feel the spirit of traditions in the old church “St. Peter & Paul” and take a walk in the old part of Turnov. Leave the city to visit the Preobrazhesnki Monastery known for its valuable murals and wood carving work dating back to the 19th century. Enjoy a wine tasting at the well known wine cellar of Lyaskovets. Follow the route to the old museum town Arbanassi - a monument architecture from the 17th-18th century. A visit to the Nativity with amazing frescoes and the ethnographic house of Konstantsaliev. Overnight in Veliko Turnovo/ Arbanassi.

 

Day 6. Veliko Turnovo-Varna

Leave Veliko Turnovo after breakfast and follow the route to the town of Shoumen. See the Tombul mosk - the largest in country and the impressive Monument “Founders of the Bulgarian State” situated on a hill above the town. Continue to visit the the Madara Horseman (UNESCO site) - an early medieval rock relief, unique of its kind in the European cultural history. Continue to Varna. A visit to the Museum of Archeology and to the Varna Cathedral. Time at leisure in the centre. Dinner and overnight in Varna.

 

Day 7. Varna-Nessebur

After breakfast departure to Old Nessebur (UNESCO site), situated on a small rocky peninsula at the southern Black Sea Coast. See the Old town’s preserved churches from the 5th till the 17th century, the early Byzantine fortress walls built in the 4th and 5th century as well as the picturesque old houses showing specific architecture. Boat trip with lunch along Nessebar and the nearby resort of Sunny Beach. Time at leisure in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in Nessebur/ Sunny Beach.

 

Day 8. Nessebur-Plovdiv-Bachkovo Monastery

After breakfast departure to the second largest Bulgarian city  Plovdiv. Sightseeing tour of romantic Old Plovidv including a visit to the Ethnographic museum, the Church of St. Konstantine and Helena and the Roman Theater (2nd century AC). Lunch and leave the city to visit the country’s second largest monastery - Batschkovo, see the monastery’s church and refectory, known for their splendid frscoes. Dinner and overnight in Plovdiv.

 

Day 9. Plovdiv-Rila Monastery-Sofia

After breakfast drive to the famous Rila Monastery (UNESCO site) - a must-see for Bulgaria visitors. The monastery is situated in an altitude of 1147 m in the heart of the majestic Rila Mountains. Enjoy the original architecture and breathtaking murals, exceptionally valuable icons and superb woodcuts. Visit the monumental monastery church, the museum which presents the monastery’s history and hosts the Raphael’s Cross - an unique work of art, and see the old monastery kitchen with huge cooking vessels. Follow then  the route to Sofia. Dinner in a traditional restaurant. Overnight in Sofia.

 

Day 10. Departure

Transfer to Sofia airport.
